If you are looking for a handcrafted latte, try this kitschy little coffee joint! Really, really good!

I decided to give Story Cafe a try as I was on the west side of the city and had read some of the positive reviews by other Yelpers. On an early Sunday morning, Story Cafe was not incredibly busy. I ordered a latte ($2.65 w/ tax) from the nice lady behind the counter and went to explore the shop while I waited. The cafe really has a nice ambiance with its darkened hardwood flooring, comfortable arm chairs and beautiful wooden furniture. A few old board games are stacked in the back corner if you're looking to pass an afternoon and there's plenty of natural lighting from the entryway windows. Unfortunately, the coffee did not live up to the setting. Served in a tall mug rather than a wide mouthed cup and saucer it came to me burnt tasting (bad beans or water temp?) and scalding hot to where the flavor of the coffee itself was totally lost. I ended up drinking it down quickly and leaving. Reminded me of a trip to Starbucks where your drink comes out with that slightly burnt aftertaste and is scalding to the point where you just sort of gulp it down without tasting much of anything in order to get the caffeine. Not a pleasant experience. Their website lists events they host each week like poetry nights and live music. Might be worth attending one of these, but if I'm looking for great coffee I will go elsewhere.

More of an antique shop that happens to serve coffee and tea. They may or may not have been chopping up bodies in the back room but it's a nice atmospheric setting.

Story cafe is so awesome! I am so sad that there is not one in the Metro Detroit area! :( Anyways, Story Cafe is a very relaxed place. The seating is nonuniform and casual, and there is something for every size group from 1-10! I didn't check if there are lots of electrical outlets, but seeing the conscientiousness and thoughtfulness of the owners in setting up the cafe, I can't imagine that they don't have them readily available. The counter is along the length of almost the entire cafe. I couldn't really find a 'spot' to order, but just find one of the owners behind the counter and talk to them and they'll help you out. But the coffee comes out at the far end of the counter. Their selection of cookies, pastries, short breads, candy etc is also quite nice. It's not super large but there should be something for everyone. The parking immediately out front on the street was available for me, and the owner actually parked right behind me which blocked their alley (which is decorated with cute wooden barnyard animals!!! so cute!!!) which left 'legal' parking for their customers, which was really nice. But even if they hadn't, there is a church? across the street with a large parking lot that is probably empty most of the week. I'll definitely be back whenever I go to GR!

I've been looking for the "perfect fit" coffee shop for a long time. After a recommendation from my wife, I tried Story Cafe and am very pleased. The ambiance and decor are relaxing (well lit, plenty of seating, classical & light music playing softly toward the back. The owners are warm, engaging and genuinely care that you have a good experience. The tea selection is excellent with local organic honey. I also indulged in a piece of chocolate cake which I'm sure to repeat again on my next visit and after at least two trips to the gym. The potato soup was creamy, decadent, and prepared with care (served with a small dollop of sour cream & shredded cheese and a side of warm bread). Prices were reasonable and well worth what I paid. The wifi was fast and easy to access (password available at counter). All-in-all Story Cafe deserves all the kudos I can lob at it. I'm in no hurry to leave and already eager to return. The northwest side has long needed this place.
